My friend Russell and I hit up Loras' campus as we got 11+ inches of snow this past Tuesday night. It is great to finally be back on skis again. Happy winter everyone!

Stupak Amendment

Now that I have started writing again I took on the challenge of writing about the Stupak Amendment; an amendment attached to the health-care bill that is currently being debated in the Senate, and passed the house.

If you don't know the background of Dubuque it is a hot-bed for the pro-life movement. It was a struggle to find people to interview that were against the amendment. I ended up being pushed to a national spokesperson from Planned Parenthood, but the story found a balance through the trusty White House speeches we get sent daily.

I spent an afternoon with protesters in front of the Planned Parenthood, a women's health clinic, in Dubuque. Here is a photo I took of cars passing the protesters.

My Weekend

This weekend I ran camera for Mediacom Channel 22 (MC 22) for an MMA fight in Dubuque. It was a unique experience. The fights were held in a concert hall at the Diamond Jo Casino. Here are a few shots from the night:

The next two nights I covered Loras Men's Soccer as they faced off in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. They won both games advancing to the third round.

Capturing Iowa is coming back! After a long time of no posting I have decided that I want to share my world and the worlds of those who I capture through my camera with you again.

I have started writing again so I will be sharing photos from my assignments and some stories I write along the way.

I hope you enjoy and welcome back to my blog, it's been awhile.

I got to do some amazing things this summer here are just a few photos of my adventures.

Have you ever stood in a soybean field and felt totally free from everything? This summer I worked on a national television spot for Pioneer High Bred (a world class seed company). It was a great experience working with a great crew.

I also got the opportunity through my great friend Marcus to go to the National Balloon classic and hang out with some balloon pilots.

I sat and watched the balloons sail with the wind. Incredible site.

That night we were invited into the private pilots area and walked around all of the balloons learning some crazy stories as the pilots lit up their balloons for the thousands who came to the classic.

I haven't posted in a long time, well because I haven't taken any photos in a long time. The photo below is the first photo I've taken in a month. I hope to be back to taking some photos now it felt good to hear the shutter click as I fired off some shots.

All three of my roommates graduated! It was close but they got it done haha.

Dachau War Trials Revisited

Loras hosted an event this past week called "To Do Justice." It focused on the Dachau war trials after World War II and the men who prosecuted and defended the Nazis in those trials. This event had a special meaning to me because I was just at Dachau a little over two months ago.

IBM announced it was bringing an advanced data systems help center to Dubuque that will bring in 1400 new jobs for the city. The leaders of the project were in Dubuque last week to discuss all of the job openings on staff. If you're a technical personal look into it!

Northern Illinois: One Year Later

Last year I covered the shootings at Northern Illinois University and I became very connected to stories I heard of the students and the staff. This year my friend Andrew and I decided to return for the one year anniversary these are the scenes I saw and the people I met. February 14th is no longer Valentines Day to me but the day when all of us for that day are all NIU. Please remember the students that lost their lives in Cole Hall that day.

Winter Sports Rap Up Seasons

Winter Sports are rapping up for the year and I spent some time in the Graber Center this past week taking it all in.

Loras hosted the Duhawk Open in the Graber Center. The meet featured big names at all levels of wrestling.

Two division one wrestlers battle it out at the Duhawk Open hosted by Loras College, a DIII school that does not give out scholarships.

We went up to Eagle Point Park on the warmest day of the year so far and got some great shots. It's interesting for me to take couples since I am so used to news, its getting easier and easier and is a lot of fun to get to know good people!

Mock Trial Madness

I got an assignment to cover a mock trial competition and I had no idea what to expect. So I walk in the doors and instantly I find myself in a crowd of hundreds of other colleges students dressed up going crazy trying to practice and prepare, and I decide this could be fun!

Exactly one year ago Ned Gall and I set out on a journey to make a documentary on Gene Tully. Gene is an artist from Dubuque and I didn't know anything about him, but by the project's end Gene's outlook on life really started to hit home to me. I hadn't seen Gene in a year and when we were making the film he had promised me an art piece, so I went down and visited with him. He always has something inspiring to say and I don't even think he realizes the impact of his words; just a great guy.

I know this is my photo blog but I wanted to share with all of you the images I, and LCTV, has captured on video over the past two years.

I was in this election from the very beginning, interviewing Tom Vilsack the day after he announced his run, and I was here at the end, seeing Sarah Palin deliver one last speech in Dubuque before election day, and through all of that I have meet some amazing people from around the state and the globe, they truly made this the greatest election of our lifetime.

I put together a 4 minute piece that looks back at the election through the lens of LCTV's reporters and photographers, from Dubuque to Des Moines and in between. Our cameras captured every candidate as they made their way around our state.

What do you do when you only have a D40 and a small lens and you are sent to take photos of a high energy band in a room with no lighting?! Well you pray you get a good photo. I turned my shutter way low and turned my fstop up and unforunately prayed I could edit in post. This is one of my results.

As a side note I have started another daily blog on Video production at LCTV13 Blogs:Commercial Corner . I hope you enjoy it too! My knowledge lies in video and these photos are just my extreme hobby, so I hope you get to know both sides of my visual creative worlds.

Sports Photos

Well I don't usually do sports photos. Nothing about them really excites me, so when I do take them I usually take pre-game and post-game shots of the athletes to capture their emotions. The photo above was taken after Loras defeated North Park 3-0. The photo above was taken before the game. You can see the level of concentration the players have and the joyfullness they have after a win. Loras soccer works extremely hard and it pays off.

This is a shot of the Loras men taking the field against crosstown foe Clarke College to start of this years soccer season. Loras won 3-1 to keep there #3 in the nation ranking intact.

I always start out well when I make a blog and then I never seem to keep up with it. I will have to decide what to do with this blog. I think I may try to post once I get back to Dubuque and start taking photos every week for the paper.

Matt Nathanson

Matt Nathanson, a very gifted singer/songer writer, played in Downtown Des Moines tonight for the Nightfall on the River series on Thursday nights during the summer. His music was great and a large crowd came out. This is really the first concert I have been able to get right up front and take a picture at. It was very nice to have a good artist and virtually no security. I have some really great photos and I will probably post more on here. I think I am going to have to take some more pictures at concerts and buy a new lens because some wide angle shots would look greaaat!

Adopting a Pet

Well I am all settled in at my cousin's new place in West Des Moines. He got just rescued a dog from a shelter before I moved in! Her name is Lady and she has to be the friendliest dog I have ever met. She is so calm and well mannered; a great first dog for him. This makes me think everyone should resque a dog or a cat from a local shelter.

My Tax Money at Work

This is a photo from the 4th of July Parade in Perry, Iowa. This is Perry's tax dollars hard at work. I have wanted to get a picture of this truck all summer and finally did. The Perry Police have two of these trucks and just got them this year. Isn't this a great use of taxpayers money in this time of expensive gas? I can't even believe it.

Fireworks!

Well, I decided to post twice since I missed yesterday. This is a photo I took Friday night of the fireworks in Perry. Can anyone guess how long I had my shutter open? This is the grand finale all in one take. To bad the fireworks were a disappointment. The little latino kids behind me sure loved them though; maybe if I was a kid again I would too.

Oh this photo is a 30 second exposure at f/20 aperture. Having Adobe CS3 and using camera RAW really helps my lack of ability to take incredible photos in the camera, but software is only half the battle. Some days I wish I didn't have any software; I use it as a crutch.

Hey all! Sorry this post is late. I made my way to West Des Moines to stay with my cousin so I don't have to pay an arm and a leg to drive to Screenscape every day, and needless to say he didn't have his internet up yet yesterday so here I am today. This is a photo from this past weekend of the parade in Perry, Iowa. I wanted to get the kid in the shot but didn't want his dad (who is just out of frame) to think I was a creeper, but this photo turned out decently enough.

Blank Park Zoo

Last summer I had an internship at the Blank Park Zoo producing Zoo TV and Wild Zoo. Along the way I had the pleasure of taking all the photos I wanted in the zoo. This is a photo of a hand raised baby wallaby named Sheila. Her mother passed away and the employees at the zoo had to hand feed her and teach her how to be a wallaby. Great story.

My mom has a tile on there somewhere. I love seeing other artists and their creative thoughts, it really makes you better at what you do. Inspiration is what drives my art. I feed off of it.
